We provide food assistance to help you achieve better nutrition and a healthier life
At St. Johns Food Share we work with retailers to collect and make good use of unsold fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen products, baked goods, dairy products, and packaged goods.
This arrangement helps retailers avoid expensive disposal of food that is still safe and healthy to eat. Sometimes produce may have slight blemishes; some items may be close to expiration date.
We re-stock the store twice a day
to keep quantities of various items available throughout our open hours
Food health begins with choices
You’ll find a variety of foods, and you select the items you prefer for your own household. We are not like a food pantry, where items might be chosen for you and offered in a pre-packed box.
Our warehouse offers safe storage of food in both freezers and refrigerators. Our members can save hundreds of dollars a month on food, easing the strain on overall monthly budgets.
We are eco-friendly
Every year 40% of all food produced in the United States is wasted. The problem stems from multiple issues in the entire “farm to fork” supply chain. This squandering of resources impacts water conservation, land use, and energy consumption. Wasted food tossed into landfills produces greenhouse gas, contributing to global warming and climate change.
Food assistance for everyone
Our members and our generous food donor partners are proud to be part of a growing solution to the global food waste problem. We hope our 28-year effort will inspire other communities to create food share groups.
Since we became members a few months ago, my wife and I have enjoyed not just a wide range of foods, including things we would not otherwise be able to afford, but I have enjoyed the increasing connections of community. I have new friends because of St. Johns Food Share. The feeling of camaraderie and goodwill at St. Johns Food Share is palpable and I look forward to being there even when I’m not in such a good mood. I even got roped into volunteering as part of the member relations working group, and I’m glad I was! It is a great feeling that SJFS is ours, and it is an inspiration to see all the volunteerism and willing hands making it work. You all make me better. Thank you. – K. McAfee
